PLAYWRITING Workshop
HOW TO WRITE A PLAY WHEN YOU DON’T WANT TO (OR FEEL LIKE YOU CAN’T OR HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO GET STARTED)
If you don’t like to write, this workshop is for you. If you are lazy, this workshop is for you. If you experience writer’s block regularly, this workshop is for you. If inspiration visits far too infrequently, this workshop is for you. If you think you could never write a play, this workshop is for you. In one 90-minute session, we will do a series of exercises that will get you motivated, un-blocked, un-stuck, and inspired—exercises that will hopefully connect you to the "play" part playwriting.

John Cariani is an actor and a playwright. He’s been seen on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof (Outer Critics Circle Award; Tony Award nomination), Something Rotten! (Outer Critics Circle Award nomination), and The Band’s Visit. Most people know him from his roles on NBC’s long-running drama, Law & Order, Numbers, and The Onion News Network. As a playwright, he is best known for his first play, Almost, Maine, which premiered at Portland Stage Company in 2004, opened Off-Broadway in 2006, and has since become one of the most popular plays in the United States and around the world. The play has received over 5000 productions to date and has been translated into over a dozen languages. Almost, Maine is now a novel, published by Macmillan. John grew up in Presque Isle, Maine, and now lives in New York City.

Award Winning Breakbeat poets, playwrights and educators Idris Goodwin and Kevin Coval lead students in a series of writing exercises. Using contemporary work from some of the world's most exciting word smiths, students are invited to draw from their own experiences and cultures to create dynamic performance poems. Applicable to all experience
levels and backgrounds, students need only to bring their lived life as well as something to write on and with.
Across two decades Idris Goodwin has forged a multi-faceted career as an award-winning playwright, Break Beat poet, director, educator, and organizer. Idris is the newly appointed Director of The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College, where he formerly taught in the department of Theatre and Dance and was voted Teacher of the Year in 2015. His critically acclaimed plays like And In This Corner Cassius Clay, How We Got On, and Hype Man: A Break Beat Play are widely produced across the country at professional theatres, college campuses, and non-traditional spaces alike. He's been honored to receive developmental support from institutions like The Kennedy Center, The Eugene O'Neill Conference, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Arena Stage, and The Playwrights’ Center.
In addition to the recently released poetry collection Can I Kick It?, he’s had several publications from Haymarket Books including Inauguration co written with nico wilkinson, Human Highlight: Ode To Dominique Wilkins, and the play This Is Modern Art co-written with Kevin Coval. He’s appeared on HBO Def Poetry, Sesame Street, NPR, BBC Radio, and the Discovery Channel. Passionate about cultivating new audiences in the arts, Goodwin served two seasons as Producing Artistic Director at StageOne Family Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky. He actively serves on both the advisory boards of Theatre for Young Audiences USA and Children's Theatre Foundation Association. A catalyst for culture, Goodwin uses his full creative powers to galvanize people to the community square. He is a creative voice for change, impassioned by art for social good.

A SHAKESPEARE WORKSHOP WITH PATRICK PAGE
An exploration of the Patrick Page Studio approach to acting. Patrick has worked consistently on Broadway over the past 25 years, most recently in the role of Hades in the 2019 Tony Award Winner, Hadestown. Patrick is pleased to share his knowledge in this class which will explore the proven techniques developed and taught over Patrick's career focusing on Shakespeares text. Performers will have an opportunity to perform a 1-2 minute Shakespeare monologue or Sonnet they have prepared or may cold read one of the pieces recommended. The session work will focus on Patrick's method of taking ownership of the text in the audition room and on stage and exploring how these techniques translate for Classical, Contemporary Drama and Musical Theatre.

Award Winning Actress, Filmmaker, and Educator Blanche Baker will be teaching this Workshop, which will focus on tips and techniques to effectively Act for the Camera.
Blanche Baker is an actress of stage, screen and television. After attending Wellesley College, Blanche made her television debut in the miniseries Holocaust, for which she won an Emmy Award. performance, or just for fun! Students will come prepared with 32 bars of a song they've learned prior to the workshop, (Song will be available to conference participants shortly)
and Patti will guide the group through fun exercises and theatre games. The session will end with a Q&A where you'll have the opportunity to ask Patti any questions you may
have. Sure to be constructive, creative, and most importantly, fun!

Performers will begin with a vocal warm-up and techniques to help expand their range and breath support. We will then learn a cut of music from Arabian Nights and incorporate acting as if they are playing the Genie. Vocal solos will be given out and then we will get to our feet and add simple staging and choreography!

Lauryn Ciardullo is currently performing on Broadway in Disney's hit show Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theater. Lauryn understudies Princess Jasmine as well as several other roles in the award-winning production. As an original cast member with the show, she has had the opportunity to perform on the 2014 Tony Awards, The View, and Good Morning America. She and three of her colleagues were also featured on the cover of the July/August 2014 issue of Dance Spirit Magazine complete with a six-page spread of their experiences dancing in Aladdin. Before making her Broadway debut, Lauryn traveled throughout the United States with numerous Broadway tours. They include the first national tour of The Wizard of Oz, A Chorus Line, West Side Story, The Addams Family, The Wedding Singer, and The Little Mermaid. While attending SUNY Purchase College, Lauryn studied voice with world renowned opera singers Shirley Love and Renata Scotto of the Metropolitan Opera. After performing at a vocal competition at The Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn, Lauryn received a scholarship to perform opera in Puglia, Italy where she performed at The Van Westerhout Theater in Mola di Bari. It was this trip that solidified Lauryn's pursuit of a career in performance. The following year she was invited to study and perform in the Tuscany Music Festival in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Since graduating from SUNY Purchase College, Lauryn’s career has given her the opportunity to teach students from theater programs, dance companies, and high schools from all over the world. Although Broadway is currently paused, Lauryn has been running a virtual theatre school called "Class With Lauryn" where young performers can learn acting, singing and dance all through zoom. We will discuss the duties of a stage manager, the structure of a stage management team, and methods of success for tracking information and running a show! Using Matt's experiences on Broadway shows like BEETLEJUICE and THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG, we will explore how a stage manager fits into the puzzle of a production. Follow along as we walk through materials Matt has created and used for these shows, and ask any questions you may have about pursuing a career in Stage Management!

Matt DiCarlo is a stage manager and director based in NYC. Before COVID struck, he was busy as the Production Stage Manager for Sing Street, which is now on hiatus. As the PSM, he also helmed the Broadway productions of Beetlejuice, The Play That Goes Wrong, the Tony-winning revival of The Color Purple, Honeymoon in Vegas, and Rock of Ages, in addition to the the world premieres of A Walk on the Moon (A.C.T.), Up Here (La Jolla Playhouse), and Piece of My Heart: The Bert Berns Story (Off-Broadway). Other credits include Broadway Bares 2017, Broadway Backwards 6, 7 & 8, and over 12 productions at Paper Mill Playhouse, including The Sound of Music, Peter Pan and The Full Monty. Matt directed the North American tour and Off-Broadway productions of The Play That Goes Wrong and was John Doyle's Associate Director for the National Tour of The Color Purple. He has served as the Production Supervisor for events with Target, David Stark Design, the Webby Awards, and for the AMC Upfronts. Matt is on the faculty at Columbia University and SUNY Purchase, and holds a BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.

Join Evan Adamson for an in-depth look into the process of design and illustration: from art studio to opening night, and everything a designer does in between. Evan will discuss the process of a scenery designer and present an extensive array of visual material throughout the presentation. Special focus will be spent presenting production artwork from his design studio, which will include sketches, drawings, paintings, miniature models, computer renderings and animation. Evan Adamson is an award winning set designer for musicals, plays, opera, and live entertainment. He has designed productions throughout the United States, and has worked extensively abroad in 10 different countries throughout Europe and Asia. A lifelong resident of New York, he currently resides in Manhattan.
Evan’s experience has spanned a wide range of endeavors, from the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, to the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Times Square to the Emmy nominated Opening Ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.
Evan’s true passion is designing for the theatre, where he has consistently worked and collaborated on Broadway for the past 10 years. As an Associate Set Designer to renowned artists such as Santo Loquasto, Es Devlin and Bob Crowley, he has contributed to 18 Broadway Productions, more than half of which were nominated for, or won the Tony Award for Best Set Design.
Additionally, he has designed over 100 productions regionally in the United States. Evan is a proud member of United Scenic Artists - Local 829, and a graduate of SUNY Purchase College, where he received a B.F.A. in scenic design.
He is the recipient of New Orleans' prestigious Big Easy Award for his design of A Christmas Carol, at Le Petit Theatre, which is remounted annually during the holiday season. His designs for The Little Shop of Horrors and Mamma Mia were honored with Florida's Broadway World Awards for Best Set Design in 2019 & 2018, respectively.
